Mother encourages youngster to keep up while keeping a watchful eye on me during their crossing a road on the Serengeti in Tanzania east Africa. This is not a petting zoo with protective barriers. If she felt threatened she would have charged our vehicle which had no place to go. We kept our distance and with the help of a 400mm lens I was able to capture this great moment.

Thank you Sharon and Ernie for your comments. Our guide upon seeing the approaching herd positioned us in a spot where we could get a good view of the crossing without disturbing them then he shut down the motor and we remained very quiet. We were close enough to hear their movement and breathing. The mother normally would have positioned her baby on her far side from us blocking our view protecting her baby. So this was really a rare moment. Once the mother noticed our presence she signaled to her baby to move to her far side. (This frame) The next several shots of the crossing shows the baby walking underneath mom and finally to her far side. Our guide instructed us to remain very still and quiet. There were about 30 elephants of various ages in this family. We were unaware of the baby until it crossed the road and came into view. (tall grass) Our ooooh's and aaaaah's must have alerted the mother This was one of the most memorable moments in my safari. I still can feel the cool breeze, hear the sounds and smell the air. Thanks again for all of your comments. Cheers, Joe
